Brief Description about the division:

• High Voltage Division has facilities to carry out dielectric tests on high-voltage equipment upto and including 500 kV rating as per National and International standards. The laboratory has NABL and ASTA accreditation and serves for Indian customers and customers from abroad.
• Impulse voltage test laboratory of the division has 3000 kV, 150 kJ Impulse voltage generator. The laboratory can carry out lightning impulse voltage and switching impulse voltage tests on high voltage equipment of rating up to 500 kV.  The division has indoor power frequency testing transformers of ratings  100kV, 50mA,  600kV, 2000 kVA and an outdoor 1800 kV, 2000 kVA cascade transformers to carry out power-frequency voltage tests, Radio interference voltage and corona test on high voltage equipment.
• The artificial pollution laboratory of the division has necessary facility to carry out artificial pollution test on high-voltage insulators up to 400 kV rating as per IEC 60507 by salt-fog method and aging studies on composite insulators as per IEC 61109, IEC 61462, IEC 62231 and IEC 62217
• The impulse current laboratory of the division established in 1996, has comprehensive testing facility for testing of zinc oxide elements and ZnO arrester pro-rated sections up to 12 kV rating in accordance with IS 15086-4 and IEC 60099-4
• The division has necessary infrastructure and expertise  to carry out grounding studies for various agencies including Generating Stations, EHV Substations and various other industries

Test facilities:

• Indoor Impulse voltage generator of 3 million volts, 150 kJ
• Outdoor Power frequency Cascade Transformers setup of 1800kV, 2000 kVA (with. 3 nos. of 600 kV each)
• Indoor Power frequency Transformers one each of 100 kV, 50 mA and  600 kV, 2000 kVA
• 550 kV Coupling capacitor along with EMI Test receiver for carrying out Radio Interference Voltage test on high-voltage equipment upto 400 kV rating
• 50 tonne Universal Testing Machine
• Hot and Cold bath for temperature cycle test on insulators upto 220 kV
• 100 kV, 300 kJ Impulse current generator
• Accelerated aging test facility on ZnO elements upto 6 kV rating
• Thermo-mechanical test chamber with temperature     control from     -50ºC to +60ºC and tensile strength from 10 to 500 KN,  for carrying out thermal mechanical tests on ceramic and composite insulators as per IEC 62217 and IEC 60383
• 12 m x 12 m x 12 m pollution test chamber with necessary facilities to carryout artificial pollution test on high-voltage insulators upto 400 kV rating by salt-fog method
• Test facility for carrying out salt-fog test for 1000 hours on composite insulators / UG cables, Surge arresters upto rating of 50 kV 

Research capabilities / expertise:

• Development tests on composite insulators viz. Tracking and erosion test facility, Hydrophobicity recovery test facility, Weather ageing test facility for arresters, Water Diffusion Test facility, Dye penetration test facility, Brittle fracture test facility etc.
• Research on evaluation of performance of composite insulators under combined pollution conditions, temperature and electrical stresses 
• The division has facility to carryout breakdown characteristics of air insulation for optimization of window clearance in transmission lines upto rating 400 kV
